International Fraud Awareness Week: Don't get scammed while shopping online!
Date: 14 November 2024
We can all agree that there is nothing more convenient than shopping from the comfort of your couch. However, as great as that is; online fraud is rampant, and criminals are getting more sophisticated in their tactics. There are ways to protect yourself.
Fraudsters are impersonating retailers by setting up fake websites and profiles, and they are attracting consumers by advertising deals that seem too good to be true (and believe us, they are). With fraudsters changing their tactics all the time, how can you protect yourself while shopping online?
Here are some tips to stay safe while shopping online:
- Where possible, stick to trusted retailers. If you're unfamiliar with a retailer, research them and check reviews on trusted consumer feedback platforms.
- Scan the website URL using our Yima website vulnerability scanner.
- If you are asked to register on a website, choose a strong password, use multi-factor authentication, and do not save it on your device or browser.
- Do not save your credit card details on the site.
- If possible, use a virtual card for enhanced security. Virtual cards create unique numbers for each transaction, making it harder for fraudsters to reuse stolen details. Many also let you set spending limits per vendor and are quick to cancel and replace if needed.
- Use trusted online payment services like PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Wallet.
- Regularly review your permissions for payment apps and your digital wallet.
- Limit the personal information you share - online shops do not necessarily need your ID number.
- Implement a cyber hygiene regimen. Make sure your anti-virus is up to date and that your phone's software is updated with the latest version.
- Avoid linking your social media accounts to online platforms - if your social media account is compromised, this could lead to unauthorised access or even theft of your payment methods.
- Always remember. If a deal seems too good to be true - it probably is...
Red flags to look out for in SA:
- Online retailers with poor security measures that require no multi-factor authentication, minimum password length, etc.
- If a site does not redirect you to confirm your transaction via your bank's 3D secure page or via your own bank's mobile app before you pay.
- When high-end or normally expensive merchandise is significantly discounted for a very limited time.
