Commodity Scams

A commodity scam is a sophisticated scheme involving raw materials like agricultural products, precious metals, or energy.

Scammers trick victims into buying worthless or non-existent assets, selling fake certificates for valuable gems/ stones, or they steal their money through using fake documentation or contracts, as well as online trading platforms.

Scammers may pretend to be high profile businesspeople in the mining sector, invested in the precious metals, gems and other valuable commodities. They arrange a 'chance' meet-up after profiling you in advance. The scammer then entices you into purchasing a precious gem or stone containing valuable metals. The stones are polished to resemble the raw material and assessors in league with the scammers issue fake certificates to authenticate the commodity.

How To Spot It

These are the red flags you should look out for:

  • It's an unsolicited offer. They approach you ‘by chance’ or bring it up out of the blue.
  • They promise unrealistic returns. The offer is better than any other offers out there and they 'guarantee' low risk.
  • They pressure you to act fast. They say they have many other people interested, and you need to move quickly, or you will miss out.
  • Vague or missing information. Something about the offer and documentation seems strange. There is very little information available and when you enquire, they throw fancy terminology your way.

What To Do

  • Verify: Always check that you are dealing with a licensed individual or organisation.
  • Do your research: Before you invest in anything, it is important that you research the person, organisation, and the type of investment. Google is your friend and speak to informed people for guidance.
  • Report it: If you have been scammed, please report it immediately to the relevant organisation and/ or authorities, as well as the Yima reporting function below, or the Yima scams hotline.
