Quishing (Malicious QR Codes)

Quishing, or QR code phishing, is a scam where criminals use malicious QR codes to trick people into visiting their fake websites, downloading malware onto their devices, sharing personal information or stealing your money.

They distribute these malicious QR codes via email, letters, messages, adverts and social media platforms. They are also printed and posted on flyers or notices and placed in public spaces.

How To Spot It

Unfortunately, the only way to avoid quishing is by not scanning a QR code. You cannot tell if a QR code is a quishing code until you scan it and by then it's too late, you may have already compromised your device.

What To Do

There are steps you can take to empower yourself to fight back against scams:

  • Do not scan any QR code: It is very difficult to spot a malicious QR code. If it is not a trusted source or site - do not scan the QR code.
  • Do not enter personal information via any prompts.
  • Monitor your device: Monitor for the installation of any malware onto your device by checking for any changes in the device's performance, possible overheating, addition of new applications, random unexpected pop-ups, rapid battery drainage or unexpected excessive data usage.
  • Report it: If you have been scammed, please report it immediately to the relevant organisation and/ or authorities, as well as the Yima reporting function below, or the Yima scams hotline.

Stop. Think. Verify. Don't get scammed!
